Look, I Pour Concrete for a Living
So yeah I'm a little biased here. But I've been doing this long enough in Sarasota that I'll give you the honest truth even if it means talking myself out of a job sometimes. Here's the deal with concrete vs pavers in Florida.
The Case for Pavers
I'll say it - pavers look great. Especially when they're brand new. You get all those patterns and colors, your driveway looks like a magazine cover. I get why people want them.
But here's what the paver guys don't always tell you. Florida soil is SANDY. Like, really sandy. Especially here in Sarasota and down through Osprey and Venice. That sand shifts and settles, and when it does, your pavers go with it. I've seen driveways over on Siesta Key that looked like a roller coaster after 5 years.
Plus weeds. Oh man the weeds. That polymeric sand between the pavers breaks down in our rain and humidity, and next thing you know you've got grass growing through your driveway. Then you're out there every weekend with a pressure washer.
The Case for Concrete
A properly poured concrete driveway on good base material is gonna last you 25-30 years easy. Maybe longer. We're talking one solid slab that doesn't shift, doesn't grow weeds, and costs you basically nothing to maintain.
Is it as pretty as pavers? In its basic form, no. But we do stamped concrete and colored concrete that looks really sharp. Won't lie - it's still not the same as individually laid pavers. But it's close and it's a fraction of the maintenance.
The Florida Heat Factor
Both surfaces get HOT in summer. Like, don't-walk-barefoot hot. If anything, lighter colored concrete stays a little cooler than dark pavers. But honestly neither one is great in July. That's just Florida living.
Cost Breakdown
- Concrete driveway: Generally runs less upfront and WAY less over time
- Paver driveway: Higher install cost plus you're looking at re-sanding and sealing every couple years
- Stamped concrete: Middle ground - looks like pavers, performs like concrete
My Verdict
Concrete all day. But I'm a concrete guy so take that for what it's worth. If you really love the paver look, go stamped concrete. You get the aesthetics without the headaches. Either way, just make sure whoever does the work preps the base right - that's where 90% of problems start.
