Alright Let's Talk Stamped Concrete
Hey folks, Brad here. I get asked about stamped concrete probably three or four times a week so I figured it's time to just lay it all out there. The honest truth - not a sales pitch.
Stamped concrete looks AMAZING. I'm not gonna lie. When we finish a stamped patio or driveway and hit it with the sealer, even my guys stop and stare for a second. It really does look like stone or brick but it's still concrete underneath.
What's Popular Around Sarasota
The two patterns I pour the most down here are ashlar slate and cobblestone. Ashlar slate gives you that natural stone look - real classy, works great around the Gulf Gate and Palmer Ranch homes. Cobblestone is more of a traditional feel and I see it a lot in Lakewood Ranch where the HOAs want that old-world European vibe.
We also do wood plank stamping which is kinda cool. Looks like a wood deck but it's concrete so it won't rot in the Florida humidity. My dad would've lost his mind if he'd seen that option back in the day.
So Is It Worth the Extra Cost?
Here's where I'm gonna be straight with you. Stamped concrete typically runs about 30-40% more than a standard broom finish pour. That's real money. On a decent sized patio we're talking maybe an extra $2,000-$4,000 depending on the pattern and colors.
It's worth it when:
- You're doing a patio or pool deck that you'll actually SEE every day
- You want curb appeal that makes the neighbors jealous
- You're planning to stay in the house for a while
- The area is a focal point of your outdoor living space
Regular concrete is totally fine when:
- It's a side yard walkway nobody sees
- You're on a tight budget and need maximum square footage
- It's a utility pad for your AC unit or trash cans
- You're planning to sell the house soon anyway
One Thing Nobody Tells You
Stamped concrete needs to be resealed every 2-3 years. That's just the deal. The sealer is what makes the color pop and keeps it protected. Skip the resealing and it'll start looking faded and worn. It's not expensive to reseal but it IS something you gotta stay on top of.
I've seen gorgeous stamped patios over in Osprey that the homeowners just neglected for five or six years and they look rough. Don't be that person.
If you're on the fence about stamped vs regular concrete, give us a call and I'll come take a look at your project. No pressure - I'll tell you what I'd do if it was my house. That's how we've always done it.
