The Big Truck Question
People sometimes ask me why we bring in a big ol' ready-mix truck for what seems like a small job. And on the flip side I've seen homeowners try to pour a whole driveway with bags from Home Depot. So let me clear this up.
Ready-Mix Concrete (The Truck)
For any job over about 1 cubic yard - which is basically anything bigger than a 10x10 slab at 4 inches - you want ready-mix. Here's why:
- It's mixed at the plant under controlled conditions. Consistent water ratio, proper aggregate, tested and certified to meet the PSI spec.
- It shows up hot and ready to pour. No mixing, no mess, no hoping you got the water right.
- You get the exact mix design you need. Want 4000 PSI with fiber? Done. Need a specific slump for a tight pour? They dial it in.
- It's actually CHEAPER per yard than bags when you factor in labor time.
We use the Argos plant locally - those guys have been great to work with. Reliable delivery times which is huge because once concrete is in the truck you're on the clock. That stuff doesn't wait around for you.
Bagged Concrete (Site-Mixed)
Bagged concrete has its place though. Small patches, setting a fence post, maybe a mailbox pad. Anything under about half a yard where calling a truck doesn't make sense. An 80-pound bag of Quikrete gives you about 0.6 cubic feet. You'd need 45 bags to make one cubic yard. That's 3,600 pounds of bags you're mixing by hand. Trust me, get the truck.
What About Mixing Your Own?
I've seen guys rent a mixer and try to batch their own concrete from raw materials. Unless you really know what you're doing I'd advise against it. Getting the water-cement ratio wrong by even a little bit can tank your strength. The ready-mix plant has quality control for a reason.
My dad used to say "concrete doesn't care about your feelings - it's gonna do what it's gonna do based on how you mixed it." He wasn't wrong about much and he definitely wasn't wrong about that.
