More Than Just Holding Back Dirt
Hey folks - Brad here. Let's talk about retaining walls. I know, I know, not the most exciting topic. But stick with me because retaining walls are one of those things that can either make your property look incredible or make it look like a highway overpass. Big difference.
Why Florida Properties Need Them
People think Florida is flat. And yeah, compared to Colorado it is. But you'd be surprised how many properties around here have grade changes that need managing. Especially in newer developments in Lakewood Ranch and out past University Pkwy where they've built up the lots. You've got a property that's 2-3 feet higher than the neighbor and that dirt's gotta go somewhere.
Without a retaining wall, you get erosion. Erosion undermines your concrete, your landscaping, sometimes even your foundation. Not good.
The Engineering Part (It Matters)
Here's where I get on my soapbox for a minute. A retaining wall is a STRUCTURAL element. It's holding back potentially thousands of pounds of soil. The footer - that's the concrete base the wall sits on - has to be the right depth and width for the height of the wall. In Sarasota County anything over 4 feet typically needs an engineer's stamp.
I've seen guys build retaining walls with no footer at all. Just stacked blocks on dirt. Looks fine for about 6 months and then it starts leaning and eventually it fails. Don't hire that guy.
We pour a proper footer - usually 12-18 inches deep depending on wall height - with rebar tied into the wall. It's not visible when it's done but it's the most important part of the whole thing.
Making Them Beautiful
Now the fun part. Your retaining wall does NOT have to look like a prison wall. Here's what we can do:
- Stone veneer facing - real or manufactured stone applied to the concrete face. Looks like a natural stone wall at a fraction of the cost.
- Stamped concrete - we can stamp the face to look like stacked stone, brick, or whatever pattern you want.
- Colored and stained - integral color or acid stain to match your house and landscaping.
- Capstone top - a nice finished cap on top ties the whole thing together and gives it a polished look.
We did a big retaining wall project over in Osprey last spring - 80 feet long, about 3 feet high, with a ledgestone veneer and landscape lighting built into the cap. Client uses it as a backdrop for their outdoor living area. It went from "we need to stop the erosion" to "this is the best feature of our yard."
Got a slope that needs taming? Give us a call. We'll come look at the grade and talk through your options.
